Understanding ASTM A672 Steel Pipe Specification and Its Applications

October 30, 2025
Hello Pipe Enthusiasts!

Previously #BPIPipeInsights!, we have discussed several international steel pipe standards such as ASTM A252, ASTM A53, and ASTM A139. This time, we will focus on another important standard for high‑pressure projects: ASTM A672. This article explains the scope, grades, production methods, and typical applications of ASTM A672 in a concise and practical way for procurement teams, engineers, and project buyers.

Scope of ASTM A672
ASTM A672 is the specification for Electric‑Fusion Welded (EFW) steel pipe manufactured from pressure vessel quality plate. These pipes are designed for high‑pressure service at moderate temperatures.
  • Diameter: generally ≥ 16 inch (DN400)
  • Wall thickness: up to ±75 mm (SCH 40 – SCH 160)
  • Length: typically 6 meters and 12 meters
Grades and Classes in ASTM A672
ASTM A672 includes a wide range of Grades and Classes, determined by:
  • Grade (e.g., B60, B65, B70) → indicates minimum tensile strength based on the plate used. Example: B60 → min. tensile strength 60 ksi; B65 → min. tensile strength 65 ksi; B70 → min. tensile strength 70 ksi
  • Class (e.g., CL10, CL11, CL12, CL22, CL32, etc.) → indicates heat treatment and testing requirements.  Example: CL10 → As welded, no PWHT; tension test only; CL11 → As welded + impact test; CL12 → Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) + tension test; CL22 → PWHT + tension + impact test; CL32 → PWHT + tension + impact + bend test
Selection of grade and class must be based on operating pressure, temperature, and required mechanical properties.

Production Methods

  • LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding) → the primary method for ASTM A672, using plate formed into a cylinder and welded longitudinally with SAW.
  • DSAW (Double SAW) → double‑sided welding (inside & outside) to ensure seam integrity under high pressure.
Chemical Composition and Mechanical Properties
  • Mechanical requirements include yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation, depending on the grade.
  • For project design, always request the Mill’s Inspection Report from the production batch.
Typical Applications of ASTM A672
  • Geothermal: steam and hot water pipelines under pressure.
  • Power plants: boiler piping, feedwater, steam lines.
  • Oil & Gas industry: transmission lines, refinery piping.
  • Petrochemical: high‑pressure process piping.
  • Infrastructure: industrial piping systems with moderate to high pressure
