Understanding the ASTM A795 Steel Pipe Specification for Fire Protection

November 03, 2025
Hello Pipe Enthusiasts!

After #BPIPipeInsights! previously discussing steel pipe standards ASTM A252, ASTM A53, ASTM A139, and ASTM A672, this time we will discuss another standard that is very important for fire protection systems, namely ASTM A795. This article explains the scope, grade, production methods, and typical applications of ASTM A795 in a concise and practical way for procurement teams, engineers, and project buyers.

Scope of ASTM A795
ASTM A795 is the standard specification for black and hot‑dip zinc coated carbon steel pipe, welded or seamless, specifically used for fire protection systems.
  • Size: NPS ½ inch to NPS 10 inch (DN 15 – DN 250)
  • Surface type: Black (uncoated) or Hot‑Dip Galvanized
  • Each pipe must undergo a hydrostatic test or a non‑destructive electric test to ensure there is no leakage
Characteristics of ASTM A795
  • Material: carbon steel with C, Mn, Si content adjusted for strength and ease of fabrication.
  • Production type: welded (ERW/HFW) most common; seamless is available but rarely used due to higher cost.
  • Fabrication flexibility: can be bent, flanged, or processed as required for installation.
  • Surface treatment: hot‑dip galvanizing is highly recommended for corrosion resistance in sprinkler and hydrant systems.
Production Methods
  • ERW/HFW (Electric Resistance Welding / High Frequency Welding) → the main method for ASTM A795 pipe, economical and suitable for small to medium diameters.
  • Seamless → optional, but rarely used in fire protection applications due to higher cost.
Typical Applications of ASTM A795
  • Automatic sprinkler systems in office buildings, shopping centers, and industrial facilities.
  • Hydrant and standpipe piping for fire protection.
  • Dry riser or dry piping in high‑rise buildings.
  • Water distribution systems for fire protection requiring galvanized corrosion‑resistant pipe.
